Celebrating the Heartbeat of WPCC: Volunteers Turned Staff

During Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re shining a spotlight on the unsung heroes of the Whole Person Care Clinic (WPCC). Our volunteers, with their diverse backgrounds and profound dedication, are the cornerstone of our mission to provide comprehensive, compassionate healthcare.

Angelica Hernandez: From Volunteer to Corporate Operations Specialist

Angelica Hernandez’s journey with WPCC began as she searched for opportunities to serve in San Diego. Starting as a Case Manager and a Spanish interpreter in our High-Risk Team, her commitment and passion quickly saw her transition from volunteer to Corporate Operations Specialist. Angelica reflects on her growth at WPCC, noting, "Now as a staff member, I feel better equipped to handle difficult situations and advocate more effectively for our vulnerable patients." Her story underscores the transformative impact of volunteering, not just on the community, but on the volunteers themselves.

Athena Magno: A Journey of Growth and Joy

Similarly, Athena Magno’s initial role as a medical assistant and designated vaccinator blossomed into a full-time commitment after she fell in love with WPCC’s mission to serve the underserved.

Now a key part of our staff, Athena finds joy in leadership, helping to steer our clinic towards greater impacts and deeper community connections. She treasures the diverse and supportive environment at WPCC, which resonates with everyone’s shared goals and passions.

Ayla Pirodan: Making a Difference at the Desk

Ayla Pirodan, who manages our front desk, first connected with WPCC when her sister needed urgent healthcare services. Inspired by the clinic's mission and the positive impact on her family, Ayla transitioned from a volunteer to a staff member. She takes her role seriously, ensuring every patient feels welcomed and cared for from the moment they walk in. Ayla's story is a beautiful testament to the personal and communal benefits of volunteering, highlighting how it can lead to meaningful, fulfilling careers.

These stories from Angelica, Athena, and Ayla are just a few examples of how volunteering not only supports WPCC’s mission but also fosters personal growth and professional development. Volunteers at WPCC are not just giving their time—they're also gaining experiences, skills, and relationships that enrich their lives.

At WPCC, we believe in treating every individual with dignity and respect, addressing more than just medical needs. Our volunteers and staff embody this belief every day, building strong relationships with patients and ensuring they receive the care they deserve. As we continue to serve our community, we remain committed to nurturing this spirit of compassion and volunteerism.

We are immensely grateful to all our volunteers, past and present, who have contributed their time, energy, and compassion to make WPCC a pillar of community health. Your dedication is the heartbeat of our clinic, and it is your spirit that guides us forward. Thank you for all that you do… this week, and every week.
